LOOKING BACK, AND FORWARD... CANNED HAMS

You know that feeling of nostalgia for the good old days of simpler times? Lately, you’ve been seeing more of those retro canned ham campers and vintage trailers on the road, and it’s not just your imagination. There’s been a resurgence of interest in classic RVing from the 40s through 70s. People are buying, restoring and hitting the road in droves with these aluminum-clad time capsules.

Maybe it’s a yearning for adventure in the great outdoors, a desire to disconnect from technology and reconnect with loved ones, or an urge to experience a taste of the era of Elvis and drive-in diners. Whatever the reason, small vintage campers and trailers are rolling their way into the hearts of Americans. Their compact and whimsical designs recall an age of optimism, freedom of the open road, and family vacations that didn’t require a vacation loan.

This retro recreational vehicle renaissance has spurred a whole subculture of camper mods, rallies, restoration resources and a vibrant community of like-minded nostalgic nomads. The vintage camper craze shows no signs of slowing down. Folks are hitching their wagons to the past and finding their way to new adventures.

The Nostalgic Allure of Vintage Travel Trailers in America The Nostalgic Allure of Vintage Travel Trailers in America There’s something undeniably charming about vintage campers and travel trailers. Maybe it’s their retro style and nostalgic vibe that harks back to simpler times. Or perhaps it’s the sense of escape and adventure they evoke. Whatever the reason, vintage trailers have become hugely popular in recent years, especially among millennials and younger generations.

A Blast from the Past These trailers instantly transport you back to the 1950s and ‘60s postwar era of leisure travel and family road trips. With their aluminum sidings, rounded edges, and pastel colors, they epitomize the midcentury modern aesthetic. The interiors are wonderfully kitschy, full of Formica countertops, vinyl upholstery, and wood paneling.

For many, these campers represent fond memories of childhood vacations and family bonding. The Thrill of the Open Road Vintage trailers also tap into a sense of wanderlust and a desire for adventure. They represent a time when the journey was just as important as the destination... Without today’s modern conveniences, you can fully unplug and de-stress while enjoying the simple pleasures - making s’mores over a campfire, stargazing at night, waking up to mountain views. For road trip enthusiasts, what could be better?

A Passionate Community The vintage camper community is a passionate one. Owners form clubs, organize rallies and events, share DIY tips, buy/sell parts, and connect over their shared love of these retro rigs. Restoring and customizing vintage trailers has become an art form. People pour time, money, and heart into revamping them while preserving their historic charm. For many, their camper becomes a beloved member of the family with a lifetime of cherished memories made on the road.

Their appeal seems as timeless as the open road itself. Popular Vintage Trailer Models Like Airstream, Shasta and Canned Ham Campers The 1950s and ‘60s saw a boom in recreational vehicles and travel trailers in America. Two of the most iconic models from this era are the Airstream and Shasta. These vintage trailers have seen a resurgence in recent years as people seek to simplify their lives and connect with nostalgic adventures of the past.

 Airstream

Airstream started in 1931 and is best known for its distinctive aluminum-bodied trailers. Models like the Airstream Clipper and the Airstream International became symbols of mid-century wanderlust and style. Today, lovingly restored Airstreams from the ‘50s and ‘60s are coveted by collectors and a new generation of road-trippers.

Shasta

Shasta trailers were manufactured from 1941 to 2004... Then Thor Coach bougt the name and started doing the "classic" models in full retro... And charging a small fortune! Models like the Shasta Airflyte and Shasta Compact (like ours) are highly sought after for their retro design. Shasta trailers were more affordable, lighter, and more compact than Airstreams, appealing to budget-conscious recreationalists and families. The brand has seen a recent revival with reissues of iconic Shasta trailers from the company’s golden age.

Canned Ham Campers “Canned ham” campers, named for their rounded, ham-can shape, were also popular in the postwar era. Brands like Aristocrat, Forester, and Bowlus Road Chief produced canned ham trailers made of steel, aluminum, or fiberglass. Their cute, compact shape and kitschy style have captured the imagination of retro design lovers and vanlife seekers. Restored canned ham campers, especially rare, all-aluminum models like the Bowlus Road Chief, are prized by collectors.

The comeback of vintage campers and trailers speaks to a longing for simpler times, an antidote to the stresses of modern life. For road trip lovers, these retro rigs offer style and nostalgia that no new model can match. The iconic “canned ham” shape, with its aluminum exterior and pops of turquoise and pink, instantly transports you back to the postwar boom of recreational vehicles in the 1940s and ‘50s. Inside, wood veneer paneling, Formica countertops, and vinyl flooring create a kitschy-cool midcentury vibe. Built-in furnishings like dinettes, couches, and Murphy beds maximize the compact living space.

A basic galley-style kitchen, small bathroom, and sleeping quarters are all you need for life on the road. The smaller size also makes them easy to tow and maneuver for stress-free camping. You won’t need an enormous SUV or truck to haul one of these lightweight aluminum trailers. Their practicality and portability add to the appeal for road trip enthusiasts and outdoor explorers.

A Community of Collectors The vintage camper community is thriving, with owners restoring and rallying the iconic “silver bullets” and “canned hams” of yesteryear. Special events like camper rodeos, trailer shows, and jamborees are held around the country where collectors gather to showcase their retro rigs. Online forums and groups provide support for finding parts, sharing DIY tips, and connecting over a shared passion for these rolling pieces of Americana. Joining a Vintage Trailer Club for Rallies and Meets Joining a vintage trailer club is a great way to fully immerse yourself in this nostalgic hobby. Clubs organize rallies, meets, and events focused on everything related to vintage trailers. Many clubs have a regional focus, so you’re likely to find one within a few hours of where you live. Check out their website to get a feel for the club and see if they’re active and hosting events. Attend Rallies and Meets The main benefit of joining a club is gaining access to their events. Rallies are multi-day campouts where members bring their trailers to a campground for a weekend of camaraderie. Meets are one-day get-togethers, often at a member’s private property. At either type of event, you can tour other members’ trailers, share tips on restoration or decorating, or just relax around a campfire together. Many members have been restoring trailers for decades and are happy to teach newcomers.

For many vintage trailer owners, the ultimate thrill is showing off their trailer to other enthusiasts. Club events provide the perfect opportunity to give tours of your trailer so others can appreciate all the hard work you’ve put into it. You might get new decorating ideas or restoration inspiration from touring other members’ trailers as well. Over time, the club becomes like an extended family, watching each other’s trailers evolve and improve. Joining a local vintage trailer club helps cultivate community around this fun and nostalgic hobby. The events, education and camaraderie with fellow members will enrich your experience of owning a vintage camper. Start searching for clubs in your area and reach out to join the adventure!  We have a stand alone photobooth too but everyone loves the camper! Check her out 928-257-2589

RESTORATION FOCUS: DIY PAINT

You need alot of money or alot of time... Or some combination of both.  I CHOSE TIME! You’ve decided it’s finally time to give your rusty old trailer a makeover in a vain attempt to impress the neighbors. Like any self-respecting weekend warrior with more ambition than skill, you’re going to do it yourself. After all, how hard can it be to spray on a new coat of paint? Famous last words. Before you unleash that rattle can of discount enamel on your driveway project, take a deep breath and a step back. Painting a trailer, even a beater, is more complicated than slapping on a new coat of “close enough” color from the hardware store. If you want a finish that will turn heads instead of stomachs, you need the right tools, the right materials, oh, and a clue. This isn’t your first rodeo, is it?

Good thing we’re here to walk you through how to get quality results in your own DIY backyard body shop on the cheap. Saddle up, this is going to be a wild ride.

Get the Right Tools Before you start flinging paint, gather the essential tools you'll need to get a professional finish: Paint gun - A high-quality HVLP spray gun will give you the smoothest results. Google "DIY" and Harbor Freight PURPLE gun and you can watch some videos.  I use a gravity fed gun from the 70s my Grampa used on tractors. Whichever gun you decide to use make sure your compressor can handle it.  You'll also need compressor hoses, and fittings. My 8 Gallon Home depot compressor runs older guns just fine.   Remember to buy an inline water filter. If you have a small compressor especially.

Sandpaper - Start with120-grit to remove old paint and rust, then move up to 300-, 400-, and 800-grit to smooth out surfaces. Paint thinner - Reducers and flow improvers will help your paint spray evenly. Masking tape - Use tape to mask off areas you don't want paint on. Drop cloths - Cover the ground to protect it from overspray. Respirator mask - Essential for protecting your lungs from paint fumes. Nitrile gloves - Protect your hands while sanding and painting. Once you have the right tools, you'll be ready to tackle any paint job with confidence and skill. Take your time, mask off areas carefully,  But before you even think about spraying paint, you need to prep the surface properly. This means different things in different situations but... thoroughly cleaning and then sanding the paint job to create a smooth surface for the new paint to adhere to. Prep Your Surface for Paint Wash the rig... DONT USE CARWASH SOAP that has waxes and polymers for aiding in shine. You want dawn dishsoap or paint prep soap. TSP substitute etc.  Thoroughly wash the entire vehicle with car soap and water to remove any built-up dirt, grease, and wax. This will ensure the new paint properly bonds to the surface.

Remove trim. Take off any door handles, trim, and moldings to mask and paint separately for the cleanest lines.

Wash it again. Seriously. Anywhere you touched the trim etc.

Sand the surface. Start with 180-grit sandpaper to remove old paint and rust from the metal. Work your way up through finer grits to completely smooth out the surface. Clean and tack cloth. Vacuum up all sanding dust and debris, then wipe down the surface with a tack cloth to remove any remaining particles. Apply primer. For the best adhesion, spray a coat of primer on all bare metal areas and let it dry completely before applying paint. Once you have a smooth, clean, primed surface, you're ready to move on to applying the paint itself. Take your time, spraying in light, even coats and allowing enough time between coats for proper drying. With the right prep work and patience, you'll be cruising down the road in style. Without good prep it will not last. There is a million videos to watch to give you an idea of good prep.

Grab your purple harbor freight purple gun or adjacent. Clean it.

Oh it's brand new? Clean it agian. ITS NOT CLEAN FROM THE FACTORY. Ask me how I know!

Depending on the gun load the paint up and fire some test paint on a panel. This is where you can adjust the fan and pattern. It's now folks. Don't decide after you lay some paint! Make sure you protect yourself by wearing safety glasses and a respirator mask. Double check that all areas you don't want painted are thoroughly covered with masking tape.

You started by spraying a practice coat on a scrap piece of metal to test your spray pattern and adjust the nozzle settings if needed. This is also a good time to make sure your compressor can handle your paint and the gun. If not you haven't even messed anything up yet. It's ok to start the process over now.....OR NEVER. If you are using a two or more tone paint job let's start up top. Do the roof first. You can't do it easily later...ask me how I know.

Once you're ready to paint, have the colors mixed as instructed on cans, For my application I used two part acrylic because of the cost of metal flake I went this route. It was fairly inexpesive. This paint has been in decline since you cant "topcoat" it.  Ill get more into that later but if you are doing metal flake I would go 2 pt acrylic enamel so its tough, yet, not expensive.  have your compressor ready with an inline water filter....hold the spray gun 8 to 12 inches from the surface and move it in smooth, even strokes. Overlap each spray pass by 50% for a seamless finish. Start spraying at the top and work your way down. This is especially important with doing two tones and stripes. This is more planning as you will need to let one section fully dry before you can tape over it... I waited like 4 days for fear of tearing my freshly applied pigment. Use multiple thin coats, waiting 20 to 30minutes in between for proper drying... More of your particular paint calls for it. Pro tip- After each coat, inspect for any imperfections and use progressively finer grit sandpaper to smooth them out before applying the next layer. I was satisfied with my prep and never did color or wet sand anything.

For metallics and pearlescent paints, 4 to 5 light coats will give you the best results. When you're satisfied with the finish, allow at least 72 hours for the paint to fully cure before sealing or clear coating. I used a two part acrylic and the hardener is what give it the shine. The white is just the mid range omni auto paint. Omni, PPG Shopline,  any decent paint shop will have basic paint that will be better than any other rattle can.  I used the shiny TCP global brand  "RESTORATION SHOP" for my metalic. Supposedly you cant really clear coat it. I know you can because I have...That being said I still sprayed it with an acrylic safe clear and will do a sparkle coat down the line. If you wait a month for the paints to gas out and dry you can use almost any clear.  If you don't seal it. The sun will eat away your hard work. Finally reassembling any trim pieces and reattaching them. Take your time during reassembly to ensure a quality result. Clean up your trash and beer cans before you show the wife for you attaboys! With patience, the proper supplies and attention to detail, you'll be amazed at the transformation.

This is a broad overview but check out the results

With patience, the proper supplies and attention to detail, you'll be amazed at the transformation
